The poll of British viewers found Malala's dedication to helping women in her native northwest Pakistan to be the most inspirational moment of 2014.
Her advocacy after standing up to the local Taliban, which banned girls from attending school, has since grown into an international movement.
Teenager Stephen Sutton, from Burntwood, Staffs, was diagnosed with colorectal cancer and died earlier this year.
He hit the headlines after making a bucket list and raised £5million for charity.
The research was announced to mark the launch of #MYWBPledge, where Discovery Channel are inviting viewers to broaden their horizons in 2015 as part of their "Make Your World Bigger" initiative.
