An American school teacher was fatally stabbed in a public restroom at a shopping mall in Abu Dhabi by a suspect wearing a black robe and full-face veil, police said.
The stabbing happened on Reem Island in the United Arab emirate on Monday afternoon, a statement on the Abu Dhabi Police website said.
The woman's attacker was reported to be wearing the traditional cloak and face cover worn by many women throughout the Arab Gulf region, and black gloves. Witnesses said the two were involved in a fight.
The injured woman, 37, who has not been named, was taken to Sheikh Khalifa Medical City where she died of her injuries, police said.
Colonel Rashid Mohammad Borshid said she was stabbed with a sharp tool, which was confiscated by officers. The cause of the fight was unknown, he said. The suspect fled the scene.
"The police are investigating to uncover the crime's causes and motives and to arrest the culprit," he added.
He said police were looking after the victim's 11-year-old twins until their father, her ex-husband, arrives from abroad.
CCTV footage of the suspect was released by police Wednesday.
Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates, and the largest of the nation's seven emirates. Large numbers of foreigners live and work there.
Last month, the Saudi Press Agency said a Canadian was stabbed by a Saudi man as he shopped in a mall with his family in the country's oil-rich Eastern Province. The injured man was taken to a hospital and the attacker was arrested.
